(1) Aberdeen Marina - Aberdeen MS: To ensure we made Thanksgiving in Dunedin FL we decided to "run" the Tenn-Tom to Mobile AL with Catch Me If you Can.  After 110 miles & 6 locks we arrived after dark - very winding channel through Cypress trees - spooky & scary!  So many boats in this little marina that we were rafted.

(2) Anchorage - Cochrane Cut-Off:  71 miles & 3 locks today; enjoyed a great dinner by Sharon aboard Catch Me If You Can.

(3)  Demopolis Yacht Basin - North Demopolis AL:  Another 71 miles but only 1 lock; had to wait over an hour to dock in the mud - was rafted with two boats at end of fairwayl

(4) Bobby's Fish Camp - Silas AL:  Marina used little boats to pull us off mud in Demopolis;  was foggy as we left with 13 boats to lock through Demopolis lock at 6:30 AM;  traveled 98 miles to raft at this desolate dock with 13 boats;  fish camp restaurant not open; paid $1 foot for no water or electricity or services!

(5) Anchorage - 3 Rivers Lake:  Not really a lake - just an indentation off the river;  heard Coon hounds - must have had coon up a tree - Larry howled back at them;  very quiet remote place that we shared with Wave-away.

(6-7) Dog River Marina - Mobile AL:  Celebration today - last lock!  Bumpy ride across Mobile Bay to this marina in the middle of no where!

(8-9) Pensacola Municipal Marina - Pensacola FL:

(1-5) Green Turtle Bay Marina - Grand Rivers KY:  Decided that we did not have enough country music so the Captain scheduled an overnight to Nashville to do some Honky-Tonkin' - what a great time!  Dined at Wild Horse saloon on barbecue - listened to country bands & learned some line dancing.  Then on to Broadway where one can wander in & out of bars where great bands are playing - did not even have cover charge!

(6) Anchorage Leatherwood Creek - Tennessee River:  Peacefull, quiet cove off the river

(7) Cuba Landing Marina - Waverly TN: Ron & Jean on Duhbe needed to stop to do laundry - they took river water into their front hatch over their bed.  Very down home & 'rustic' marina!  Was invited to a gathering of locals for banjo & guitar picking - sure was back woods!

(8) Anchorage Swallow Bluff Island - Tennessee River:  Joined by about 6 other boats for the night behind an island tucked off the river from the tows.

(9) Anchorage Cove Off Pickwick Lake:

(10) Municipal Marina - Florence AL:  Arrived at marina just at check-in time for a bass fishing tournament - over 250 boats.  Each boat had a professional & an amateur fisherman.  We had to 'honk' our way into the marina!  In the morning we woke to over 200 boats around our boat - preparing for the start of the day's tournament - first they had a prayer, then the Star Spangled Banner - then called each boat for inspection & send off for the day of fishing.  Heard that the next day was only 10 boats - that the overall purse was $1M+.

(11-30) Joe Wheeler State Park Marina - Rogersville AL:  Enjoyed meeting with all the loopers at the Fall Rendezvous at this very nice lodge.  As the marina was really inexpensive for a month of dockage we opted to rent a car & drive up to Chattanoga TN about 3 hours away.   The scenery traveling there was beautiful but the colors have not really come out - too cold & drought.  Visited Ruby Falls which are inside a cavern of the mountains - really stunning!  Also rode an incline railroad up the side of mountain & toured Rock City - a rock & flower garden with paths. Lovers Leap overhangs the valley where you can see 7 states - AL, FL, GA, NC. SC, TN, VA.  It was sort of hazy - still a great view!  The Aquarium was good - not quite as good though as Baltimore - did really like the Butterfly Room - hundreds of them that even landed on you!  Larry good an Alabama fishing license - caught a couple of catfish so far.

(31) Aqua Yacht Harbor - Iuka MS:  Left Joe Wheeler with FreeBird, Catch Me If You Can, & Bette B; leaving the Tennessee River into the Tenn-Tom

(1-8) Great Lakes Naval Base - 38 miles above Chicago:  Sponsored to stay on the base by John on Restless Spirit as he is retired from the Navy.  The base is really neat - fun to watch sailors - they look like 12 year olds to us!  Took the train into Chicago downtown with lots of white uniforms - looked like fleet week.

Toured city on a trolley which included the ethnic neighborhoods of Little Italy, Greek Town, & China Town: enjoyed Greek Dinner; saw Harpo Studios - Ophra was filming in New York at time.  Realized how much the city had changed since I left in 1964 as most of the buildings were build in the 1980's.  Saw the Merchanidise Mart where my Dad worked for Western Electric & the grand Drake Hotel where my Mom worked for Spalding & Company Jewelers.
Visited with Uncle Bill - shared a delicious Italian dinner with him & 3 of my 5 cousins.  What a walk down memory lane!

(9-12) Dusable Marina - Chicago IL:  What a view filled with emotion for me as we cruised into the harbor of my birth place!  Decided we had enough sight seeing - so just enjoyed the view for first 2 days.  HIgh school friends Karen (also my Matron of Honor) & Jim came in to spend Tuesday night - took architectural tour down Chicago River; walked around Navy Pier;  caught up on each other's lives.  Wednesday we rode our bikes through Millenium Park & Grant Park - great bike paths for miles alone water front.  Joined Loopers on Wild Turkey & Colonel's Lady for dinner at Chicago Chop House - great prime rib!

(13-15) Free Park Wall - Joliet IL:  Short 10 mile cruise down Lake Michigan to Cal Sag Canal was choppy.  Our first lock of 8 to Mississippi was only a 6" - yes inch - drop.  Second lock was a drop of 40' - locked through with 8 other Looper boats who also joined us for the first night in Joliet.  Both locks were easy - especially the second where we rafted to another boat instead of the wall.  It was tedious navigating around all the barge traffic - a very busy canal hauling gravel from quarries, coal, fertilizer, fuel, etc.  Some tows are 3 barges wide by 3 long! Had to move twice on the wall because the tows were complaining - they had some slight turns to make & we were dangerously on the wall in a critical place.  Found out later from the coast guard that there is only a small section that is safe - it is not marked well.  Met a man whose houseboat was crushed by a tow when it was docked at the second spot we were docked in.  Plan to visit Harrahs Casino & attend a Latin Festival in the Park by our boat while here.

(16-17)  Free Town Docks - Ottawa IL:

(18) Hamms Marina - East Peoria IL:

(19) Free Town Dock - Peoria IL:

(21-23) Grafton Harbor Marina - Grafton IL:

(24) Hoppies Marina - Kimmswick MO:

(25) Kaskaskia Lock Wall - Mississippi River:

(26) Anchor Mississippi River - Cairo IL:

(27) Anchor Cumberland Tow Head Island - Ohio River:

2007

(1) Flotilla Day 6 - Wrights Marina - Britt ON:  Long day - included some rough waters on Georgian Bay.  Small marina with almost no town.  Overate, again, at pot luck dinner with the fellow flotilla Loopers.

(2) Flotilla Day 7 - Sportsman Inn - Killarney ON:  Small fishing town - used to be only accessible by boat.  New owners just took over the inn - a really neat old type sporting lodge.  Lots of current - held our breath as each looper boat docked - guess you could call it entertainment at the risk of offending our fellow boaters.  All of us have been there - so we know how it feels!  Dined at Henry's Perch Bus - a red bus that served fish & chips.

(3-5) Flotilla End - Municipal Marina - LIttle Current ON:  Lots of goings-on as it is the Haweater Festival - a celebration based on the Haw berry which we understood was very bitter.  Never did see a berry to test!  Attended an antique car show, small (really small) street fair, cardboard boat race

& horse pull where teams of 2 Belgian horses attempt to pull 3000+ pounds of cement.  Winning team pulled 8000 pounds - twice what the 2 horse team weigh.  Learned a lot about these pulls as we watched from the announcer's booth.  The week-end ended with a bang - a boat light parade & spectacular fireworks.

(6) Anchorage - Baie Finn ON:  Really bittersweet as all the flotilla members continue on their individual journeys.  Heard Baie Finn was a beautiful spot to anchor between the limestone cliffs - so cruised back 15 miles.  Took Restless Spirit up the bay as she was smaller - lunched with John & Tonia - Mike & Vicki.  Hiked up to Topaz Lake - a deep lake up in the limestone hills.  Disappointed - long rigorous hike, swimming access was difficult, lake was not as spectacular as we heard.

Wind changed directions in the middle of the night sending 2-3' waves on our stern.  Rafted with 2 other boats with a stern anchor  thus we did not turn.  Were all up at 2:30 AM checking things out!

(7) Municipal Marina - LIttle Current ON:  Was not our destination - awaiting Little Current bridge we cut our lines on our props while towing our dinghy.  Captain had to dive (used his new hooka rig) to cut lines off shaft & then buy new lines to hoist the dinghy back up on the swim platform.

(8) Anchorage - Benjamin Islands ON:  Found a serene, beautiful cove in South Benjamin Island - surrounded by pink granite hills.  The stars at night were spectacular as there are no city lights for miles & miles!  Hiked up the hills the next morning to view our boats - SeaSeaQ4 & Drifters.

(9-10) Municipal Marina - Gore Bay ON:  Nice small town with neat stone houses.  Was able to grocery shop, get a hair cut, & other chores.

(11-12) Municipal Marina - Meldrum ON:  Nothing here except a few boaters & an Inn where we had lunch; stuck a second night due to high winds.

(13) Drummond Island Yacht Basin - Drummond MI:  Bittersweet as we left the North Channel of Canada & cruised back into the USA.  Customs clearing was easy but being back into the USA did not mean we had Internet or cell phone coverage!

(14-17) Municipal Marina - Mackinaw City MI:  Took ferry over to Machinac Island - site of Grand Hotel where "Somewhere In Time" filmed & no motorized vehicles on the island.  Toured island by horse & buggy - enjoying nature & Victorian summer homes.  Fudge is the big thing here - it is everywhere!

(18-20) Municipal Marina - Charlevoix MI:  Great tourist town on a lake.  Checked out  Earl Young homes on our bikes - known as "mushroom homes."

(21) Jacobson's Marina - Frankfort MI:  Another great Michigan harbor town.

(22) Municipal Marina - Manistee MI:  Quaint town with lots of fishermen docked along the river.  It is salmon season here - saw some big ones being cleaned along the riverwalk.  There are serious fish cleaning stations here.  Took in a movie at an old 1941 theater.

(23-25) Harbor View Marina - Ludlington MI:  Great marina & town to be stuck in due to weather - cable, pool, hot tub, shopping, cheap homecooking, etc.  Salmon fishing big time here - basically a flotilla of boats going out at sunrise & sunset - half of marina goes out.  Fish cleaning stations are cages with stainless tables & large disposals that grind the bones.

Last remaining coal burning carferry - Badger - docked right in front of our dock.  Amazing to watch the monster enter the harbor & spin in the narrow area to dock.

(26-28) Manitowoc Marina - Manitowoc WI;  Woke at 6 AM for the 60 mile cross lake voyage - still dark so we waited for twilight.  Must have been over a hundred fishing boats that started to leave at 4 AM.  Lake crossing took 6 hours & was just a little rolly with 2 footers.  Manitowoc known for ship building like Burger Boats & WWII submarines - 28 built for war.  Toured sub Cobia at Mariners Museum - must have been a claustrophobic experience for 80 men on board - imagine they slept on cots on top & under torpedos.  Rented a car with Vicki & Mike (Drifters) to tour Door Country - a pennisula between Lake Michigan & Green Bay.  Name is from "Death's Door" - the passage from the Lake to Green Bay where many boats were wrecked.  Toured wineries & enjoyed Scandanavian towns - lunched at Swedish restaurant where goats eat grass on the roof - check out http://AlJohnsons.com

(29-30) Harbor Centre Marina - Sheboygan WI:  Lake was the flattest we have seen on our short 27 mile cruise.  Little disappointed as we expected Sheboygan Brats everywhere - they are a little difficult to find - actually eating establishments are few here in this quiet downtown.  Very quiet here - not even many people walking around.Stayed 2 nights due to lake's high wave forecast of 3-6 feet - plan to do an art museum today.  This is the home of Kohler that makes bath fixtures - it is a really big plant with a 3 story show room of products - not planning on visiting.

(31) Milwaukee WI:  Took bike ride through water front park - marina was some distance from town.  Below is the Milwaukee Art Museum.  Celebrated our 39th anniversary with Loopers on Wild Turkey & Colonel's Lady at Karl Raitz German Restaurant - probably the best sauerbraten I've had in a restaurant.

July

2007

(1-2) Fraser Park Marina - Trenton ON:  At the beginning of the Trent Severn Canal - 44 Locks and 240 Miles.  Now venturing into waters not cruised last year!

(3-4) Old Mill Park - Campbellford ON: Long day - about 8 hours to do 12 locks & 31 miles - first 6 locks were in only 7 miles.  We are so happy with SueSeaQ4 - she performs so nicely! Nice town with a great bakery; stayed second night as it rained all day.

(5) Lock Wall - Hastings ON:

(6-8) Peterborough Marina - Peterborough ON:  Time to provision & prepare mentally for the BIG Peterborough lift lock which is a tub the boat drives into & lifts 65 feet.  There are 2 tubs; water is let out of the one we are in so the balance is offset & it rises.

(9) Lakefield Marina - Lakefield ON:  On our way to the Lift Lock - it was actually awesome!  Barbecued skewers from M&M - a great store with prepared meats. Spent the afternoon swimming.

(10-11) Gordon Yacht Marina - Bobcaygeon ON:  Just before Lock 32

(12) Lock 39 Wall - Trent Severn ON:  Overheated on port engine after 2nd lock - captain suddenly remembered he did not open the sea cock when he checked the strainers for grass this morning.  Docked before the Lake Simco which was very rough - he tried to replace the impeller but could not negotiate it in the space.  Decided to cross the lake which had calmed on 1 engine to Orillia - all went well.

(13-15) Port Orillia Marina - Orillia ON:  Angus Mainship installed our impeller & all is well.  Enjoyed exploring the town - great farmers market - bought home made bratwurst & bread.

(16) Lock 43 Wall - Swift Rapids ON:  Had to wait about 1 hour for a train before the first lock.  Did Kirkfield Lock - other lift lock that drops 49' - so you drive into a tub hanging over the water.

Lock wall is in a remote location - it is a big drop of 49' - the doors were big!  Built a campfire.

(17) Canal Dock Lock 44 - Big Chute ON:  Big day - we ride the marine railway in our boat over land - sure looks smaller than my imagination from last year!  Captain shut the sea cocks to save our implellers as other boats burnt theirs up after put back in the water.  We drove into the belts like a boat lift & rode over the hill.

(18-26) Bay Moorings Marina - Penetanguishene ON:  Can't believe we completed the Trent Severn & are in the most beautiful place - Georgian Bay!  Very rocky & some tedious navigating especially through the Potato Channel - named that because the rocks look like potatoes sitting in water.  The water is so clear - great because we can actually see the rocks.  Arrived 3 days early due to weather forecast.  Thursday a big storm surprised us quickly with heavy winds & rain - rained all night.  Friday was windy with a beautiful blue sky - a little cool but welcome!  The Rendezvous was great - learned a lot about the voyage ahead & met many new friends.

(27) Flotilla Day 1 - Port Rawson Bay Anchorage:  Our flotilla of 22 boats left at 8 AM for our cruise through the 30,000 Islands of the North Channel of Georgian Bay.  What a sight to see the line up of boats!  The morning started off hazy but grew better as the day went on.  Words can not do justice to describe what we saw - the cottages, narrow channels, clear water, rocks, etc.  The cottages are just that - not opulent but congruent with the natural surroundings.  Only accessible by water - imagine building them & having to bring everything in.  Some islands are miles from main land - need a fast boat to provision, etc.  After 45 miles we arrived at the bay & the process of rafting 22 boats began.  Bob & Karen, our guides, first anchored bow & stern - a boat rafted on each side & continued until all 22 rafted.  Every 3 boats set a bow anchor as they rafted; then stern anchors set every 3 boats.  What an awesome sight - 22 boats stretched across the bay!  We swam, happy houred, barbecued elk steaks.

(28) Flotilla Day 2 - Port Rawson Bay Anchorage:  All jumped into our dingies to cruise 5 miles up to Moon River Falls.  Swam in pool below falls - got leeches all over - little black wormy things - yuck!

(29-30) Flotilla Day 3/4 - Big Sound Marina - Parry Sound ON:  Unrafted boats; cruised 5 miles to Henry's Fish Camp on Frying Pan Island for Fish & Chips - great pickerel!  A famous stop for cruisers & sea planes - people actually pay $140 per person to fly there for lunch.  Had an "Oh my God!" navigation one place on remaining 15 miles - best described as "Kiss the red, kiss the green; lick your lips, & pass between! Shopped & explored the next day; enjoyed Happy Hour hosted by Bob & Karen with smoked fish & homemade wine.

(31) Flotilla Day 5 - Killbear Marina:

(1) South Lake Anchorage - Columbia NC:  Anchored with Restless Spirit in this peaceful spot in the Alligator River Nature Preserve; never saw the black bears or red foxes that inhabit the area; heard the foxes howl but did not hear them.  Winds kicked up at night.

(2) Waterfront Marina - Manteo NC:  Decided to move on even though very windy as do not want to be stuck in a remote anchorage with storm forecasts; this is a beautiful little town!  Sampled the She-Crab soup at the Pelican Pub; agree with what we read - that it is the best in the world - just full of lots of lump crab!

(3) Coinjock Marina - Coinjock NC:  Enjoyed our 32 ounce Prime Rib after another very rocky, rolly ride across the Albermerle Sound.

(4-8) Tidewater Marina - Portsmouth VA:  After 8 hours of 49 miles of 9 bridges, 1 lock, & no wake zones we are glad we beat the predicted wind storms & are tied up safely.  Toured Jamestown Settlement with John & Tonia (Restless Spirit); sat in the pew where Queen Elizabeth sat the day before - practiced my wave below with Tonia!  Went to my first ballet (no the Captain did not go!) to see Sleeping Beauty - long but a great experience.  Went to the Commodore Theatre to see Fractured (as usual ? keeps you on the edge of your seat) - luxurously restored Art Deco style motion picture theatre with 42' screen & THX digitial sound that almost blows you out of your seat; dining at your table with a phone to place order.

(9-10) Delegal Creek Marina - Savannah GA:  Visited with Bruce & Jeannie (Inevitable II). Toured Savannah Old Town - enjoyed the historic colonial & Victorian architecture; Congregation Mickve Israel, first Jewish Synagogue that is today Reformed , was particularly interesting in how it was similar to a protestant church. (25) Caspers Marina - Swansboro NC:  Probably the wildest docking we have ever done - against 40 mile gusts on our beam on an inside dock - the captain did a great job!  Of course, we ate breakfast at Yanna's for the great apple fritters.

(26-27) Town Creek Marina - Beaufort NC:  Dinked to town - shopped; toured Mariners Museum; shopped some more.  Walked for miles to Hardees & DQ for ice cream! Took a walking tour of the Old Burying Ground - a cemetary where you learn about the lives of those resting there; what a view of the past!

(28) Greens Creek Anchorage - Oriental NC

(29-30) River Forest Manor Marina - Belhaven NC:    A quiet, quaint Southern town which we toured on a golf cart with John & Tonia (Restless Spirit).  The Marina has an old Inn which we were able to tour as their were no lodgers; beautiful antiques; enjoyed a great buffet dinner.  Rented a car to see New Bern, Bath, & Washington.  Toured Tryon Palace in New Bern which is a rebuilt replica of NC's first first permanent colonial & state capital - lovely gardens & beautifully furnished.  Bath is NC's first town on the Palmico River - established 1705.  Washington was a neat waterfront town which we will try to boat the 33 miles up the Palmico River when we pass through next year.
